We work together with several large size farms from all over Hungary (over 500 hectares) running traditional, no-till, precision farming approaches . Our main interest is soil , soil genesis, short term soil processes and properties indicating changes in soil quality as feedback on different tillage, cropping applications. We do have more than 15 fields (between 50-100 hectares in size) mapped in high detail and backed up with lab data (texture, nutrient chemistry, base cations, CEC)from around 25 soil profiles with all genetic horizons. All of them are processed, interpreted and backup with a GIS database of the soil maps, high resolution DEM from RTK cultivation data complemented with historical set of RS images representing the within field heterogenitiy of the parcel. I am the chair of the IUSS soil genesis commission, where this topic is also a hot issue and planned to have a special publication on it.
My organization is University, with special interest on supporting precision agriculture with soil science and geoinformatics, field soil description and consulting complemented with soil mapping and digital soil mapping and management zone identification, especially for VRI (variable irrigation rate). We started to work together with enthusiastic farmers applying soil regenerative techniques. We also work on developing smart approaches using soil monitoring tools to support agricultural production and monitor soil quality and anthropogenic impacts. We also cooperate with the Hungarian University of Agricultural and life sciences to incorporate soil biological aspects of the description and evaluation of different tillage practices. We participated in several international projects from FP5,6,7 and H2020. The most recent one was the Grow observatory, where we were the soil science and mapping, interpretation of the soil moisture monitoring data. This project has received the Land and soil management award of the European Commission and The European Landowners Organization. We are also very active in developing media content on soil outreach, awareness raising and soil education.
