soil carbon, greenhouse gas emissions, soil microbial community, agricultural and forest soils
Soil restoration
We are interested in being an active participant in a project investigating soil carbon and greenhouse gas emissions, and their links with soil microbial communities, in agricultural and forest soils. We have expertise and both field and laboratory resources in these areas. Notably, we have an established long-term field research facility (UCD Long-term Grazing Platform- https://globalfarmplatform.org/lyons-farm/ ) with farmlet-scale replicated treatments of grass monoculture, grass/clover and multispecies grassland, as well as blocks planted in trees and retained in the original arable land use. We could add further field sites to this to cover agricultural and forest management practices on additional agricultural and forest soil sites. We are primarily interested in Topic A- Management practices on different agriculture and forest soil types in order to minimize greenhouse gas emission. However, we would be interested to discuss other possibilities.
UCD is the leading university in the Agricultural Sciences in Ireland. Our Section, Environment and Sustainable Resource Management, in the School of Agriculture and Food Science, combines both agricultural and forestry research interests. We have extensive field and laboratory facilities for investigating soil C, GHG emissions and other aspects of soils and sustainability. The UCD Long-term Grazing Platform is a part of the Global Farm Platform (https://globalfarmplatform.org), linking with similar research and extension farms focused on sustainability internationally.
