Research and development of innovative methods and sensing technologies
We are looking for collaboration partners with expertise in materials science oriented fungal research to identify most promising fungi to cultivate in urban areas on substrates. We are also looking for SMEs or research partners who can process mycelium or mushrooms (fruiting bodies) to produce alternative bio-based (non-food) materials, i.e., vegan leather, plastic, fertilizer, construction materials, etc. Finally, partners with expertise in urban faming could complement our consortium.
Our research project should identify fungi that can absorb carbon dioxide from urban areas and analyze potential city locations for building fungi plants. Fungi grown in urban areas should then be analyzed for their potential to substitute other biomass used in the production of bio-based materials. Thereupon, we want to identify high impact opportunities of fungi production on climate and economy as well as to develop sustainable business models thereupon. Finally, the project goal is to pave the way for a future pilot fungi production plant in a city and produce small-scale materials to substitute a selected other bio-based material.
Based upon our competences, our role in the project consortium is to conduct life cycle analysis and develop impact measurement scales for different utilization paths and sustainable business models along different circular economy value chains. Moreover, we offer to manage the consortium.
